The drawing of lots for the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Women’s U21 World Championship was held on Friday in Leon to outline the first three opponents for each of the 16 participating teams. The draw was streamed live on the Volleyball World YouTube channel.

Mexico 2023 will be staged in Leon and Aguascalientes from August 17 through 26 and will be the first junior world championship for women’s teams since the age limit was changed from U20 to U21. The 16 teams were split into four single round-robin pools of four for the first stage of the championship.

In what is likely to be the most anticipated match of the first pool phase, Italy, whose teams won the U20 world title and claimed silver at the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship, both two years ago in 2021, will engage in a Pool B clash with Brazil, the most decorated team in the history of the junior world championships.

All pool winners and pool runners-up will continue the race for the medals in another two pools of four for the second phase of the tournament. The top two teams from each of those two pools will qualify for the semifinals. All teams will keep playing in the competition to determine the complete final standings in the places from 1st to 16th, following a similar formula of two pool stages and playoff matches in each layer of the bracket.

Pool A: Mexico, Egypt, Thailand, Japan
Pool B: Italy, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Tunisia
Pool C: Serbia, Poland, Argentina, China
Pool D: United States, Netherlands, Türkiye, Cuba
