Brazil will have 13 of the 14 players who appeared at last year's Olympic Qualifier back

Set to host matches in the opening week of the Volleyball Nations League 2024, Brazil announced the 30 players that will be eligible to form their squad in the tournament.

The list released by longtime head coach José ‘Zé Roberto’ Guimarães includes nine players who were part of the team’s silver-medal-winning campaign at the Tokyo Olympics, many of whom haven’t played for the national team in years.

Zé Roberto brought back 13 of the 14 players that helped the team qualify for the Paris Games at last year’s Volleyball Olympic Qualifier – setter Naiane Rios, who’s injured, is the only exception.

Star captain Gabriela ‘Gabi’ Guimarães, Olympic champion middle blocker Thaisa Menezes and veteran setter Macris Carneiro are among the players set to lead the South Americans in the upcoming season.

Up-and-coming outside hitter Ana Cristina Souza, who missed part of last year’s international season due to a knee injury, will return to the team after getting back on the court with Fenerbahçe in the Turkish League. Middle blockers Carol Gattaz and Julia Kudiess, who both missed the last season due to injuries, also reappear in the coach’s selection.

Appearing as options for Brazil’s VNL roster for the first time are setter Giovana Gasparini, opposite Sabrina Machado, outside hitter Helena Wenk and middle blocker Luzia Nezzo.

Zé Roberto’s list includes players who haven’t featured for Brazil in several years, many of whom already announced their international retirements, most notably outside hitter Natalia Pereira, libero Camila Brait, setter Dani Lins and middle blocker Adenizia Ferreira. It’s still unsure if they will indeed be called up by the coach for the season as the players invited to the training camp will be announced in the upcoming weeks.

Already qualified for the Paris Olympics, Brazil will play in front of their home fans in Rio de Janeiro in the opening week of the VNL, from May 14-19. The South Americans are set to have Canada, Korea, USA and Serbia as their first opponents in the tournament.
