Launched in 1949, the oldest competition on the international calendar will return from August 26 through September 11. It will be the second time it is hosted by two nations, after Italy and Bulgaria jointly organised the previous edition in 2018.

The five continental confederations will be represented as battles for planetary honours begin on August 26. With Australia the only exception, 15 of the 16 teams that competed in the VNL will also participate in Poland-Slovenia 2022. That includes five teams which have previously won the World Championship – Brazil (three times), Germany (once), Italy (three times), the United States (once) and defending titleholders Poland (three times). Other teams to look out for are Argentina, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Iran, Japan, the Netherlands, Serbia, Slovenia and reigning Olympic champions France. They will be joined by another nine teams who did not participate in this year's VNL, namely Cameroon, Cuba, Egypt, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Tunisia, Türkiye and Ukraine.
