An Olympic champion, Klineman returned to the sand last week in Paris

Alix Klineman’s plan of competing at the 2023 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships with new partner Hailey Harward just four months after becoming a mother seemed like a bold one when she first announced it, less than two months ago.

A first-round loss at the qualifier of the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Paris Elite16 in their first tournament together last week didn’t make things any better for the Americans, but it all changed in their first match in Tlaxcala, Mexico, on Saturday.

Faced with one of the best teams in the world, Germans Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann, who took bronze at the 2022 World Championships, Alix and Harward pulled off a strong two-set (25-23, 21-14) win to celebrate their first triumph as partners and start their campaign in Mexico on the right foot.

A Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion, the 33-year-old Alix was in excellent form against the Germans, producing 19 points with 15 kills, three aces and one block. The Americans will now play Brazil’s Tainá Bigi and Victoria Lopes and China’s Jie Dong and Fan Wang in their remaining Pool K matches.

“We’re really happy,” Alix, who took silver at the 2019 World Championships, told Volleyball World. “Germany are a great team and we’ve been preparing really hard for the last two months. Paris didn’t go the way we wanted and we’re just excited to have more opportunities to compete together. We have a tough pool. Brazil and China are both really good teams and we’re not expecting anything to be easy. Maybe our opponents didn’t know much about us as a team but now they will have a little bit more information to scout.”

Playing in her first World Championships, the 25-year-old Harward is enjoying her experience in Tlaxcala and the opportunity to play with an Olympic champion.

“I’m so stoked to be here competing with Alix,” Harward commented. “The bullring is amazing, we love Tlaxcala. The fans are so nice and energetic. This is probably my favorite place I’ve played at.”

Alix and Harward’s victory contributed to what has been a perfect day for American women in Mexico so far. Besides their victory, the country also celebrated the triumphs of Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss over Japan’s Akiko Hasegawa and Yurika Sakaguchi (21-15, 21-15) in Pool B and Betsi Flint and Julia Scoles against Austrian sisters Dorina and Ronja Klinger (21-17, 21-14) in Pool J.

The opening round of the event will continue until Monday, when the 32 teams that will advance to the elimination rounds will be known. The winners and second-placed teams from each of the 12 pools in each gender will advance to the elimination rounds, as well as the four best-ranked third-placed tandems. The eight remaining third-placed duos will need to play in a lucky loser round, with four of them moving forward.
